The Benefits of a Facial Peel

As we head into the deeper darker months of fall, that summer glow begins to disappear and our skin can be left looking and feeling...well, dull. One of the best ways to get your skin shining again is by doing a facial peel.

Many people think that doing a facial peel is going too be harsh for their skin, will cause excessive peeling, or that they may need a lot of down time after a treatment. This can be true, but it really depends on the strength and type of the peel that you are doing.

Peels are typically derived from glycolic, salicylic, and or lactic acid. Glycolic acid (AHA) is an alpha hydroxyl acid that comes from sugar cane. It functions to exfoliate, while still hydrating the skin. It works well to smooth fine lines and brighten the skin. Salicylic acid (BHA) is a beta hydroxyl acid, which works to dissolve bacteria, and is therefore often used to control breakouts. Salicylic acid works slightly deeper than glycolic acid and also stimulates cutaneous shedding which helps to exfoliate the deeper layers of the skin. Lactic acid is actually derived from milk. Due to the fact that these molecules are larger than the AHA and BHA acids, these peels work best on skin that does not require a deep exfoliation. Lactic acid peels are also the most gentle of all three and can even be used on those with rosacea.

Most professional peels are a combination of all three of these compounds. Thus, the acids work synergistically to accelerate the exfoliation process, remove dead skin cells, prevent and decrease breakouts, reduce the appearance of pigmentation, fine lines and sun damage.

It is important to note that these products can also range in strength. Anything higher than 10% is considered for professional use only. In fact, peels used to be available at 40% strength. More recently, however, health Canada has eliminated the use of these strong peels, leaving only 20% available for professional use at this time.

At Markham Village we have always been strong believers in keeping things gentle, yet effective. One of our most popular treatments this time of year is the yam and pumpkin enzyme peel. It is a blend of the lactic and glycolic acids to smooth and improve the texture of your skin. It also contains phyto-hyaluronic acid which is a deeply hydrating, natural substance that plumps skin to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This treatment will leave your skin radiant and ready for holiday season. Ask about our peel series or any other of our treatments today!
